If I Should Have a Daughter

I got up this morning and re-watched one of the most powerful and inspirational video’s I’ve ever seen.

Whenever I want to remember how important it is to be true to myself I listen to her magnificent words.

This is the video of Sarah Kay who opens with a poem called “If I should have a daughter”  and if you only watch the first 4 minutes it will be well worth your time. I promise.

She got two standing ovations in the course of 20 minutes.  POWERFUL.

Let it change the way you feel today, let it sink into your bones and be meat and substance for your soul.

I see myself in her- I see all of us in her.  Please forward to your best girl this am, and tell her you see her as well.

  1. I watched the entire video! What an amazing voice she has! I’ve often attempted to write poems, but for some reason get judgmental about them and quit. Maybe I’ll give it another try.
I liked so much of what Sarah shared, but especially the part about saying, “I can, I will,” and then diving into the the things you don’t know. I feel like my own written work where I’m sharing my unknowns are the ones people respond to the most!
    Thanks for sharing this!

    • I think I love poetry because the words you can layer and stack and you don’t really need to “format” them- it’s such a great way to describe things that can’t otherwise be described? Do I even make sense? I loved that part the best too! I think you’d be excellent at it because you have been through things that traditional writing has trouble capturing. Try it! xoxoxo

  2. Absolutely love the first four minutes of this video… try to instill all of this in my daughters. And then of course settle for the bits and pieces they absorb, and accept what works for them in their lives, and understand that often we take more with us than we realize from the people we love, who care about us, and do their best to share what they have learned and come to understand.

When life hands you those “moments,” it’s best to slow down, savor them and commit them to memory. I’ve come to realize that it’s moments – not milestones – that really matter.

    Thanks for sharing Monica!

    • Ted,
I especially love how she connects the dots of the “story” she wants to tell at the end of the video ( if you got that far) where she tells the story of her life as an “old soul” So true that poetry really captures these “gaps” in our experience and in our knowing of self that encapsulates so much more than traditional “writing” ever could. Your girls are lucky. Lucky that you care, engage, and interact. Lucky that you know the value of those moments that will in the long run, shape them into the amazing women they MUST become. Thanks for responding!

  3. Louise-

Wasn’t that amazing? Yes- I love bringing the backpack of experience with you… Austin got me that poem “Point B” in gift book form and gave it to me this christmas. It’s a beautiful little book- nice gift for mothers day or for friends just as a gift.
    xoxoxxo!

  4. I watched the entire video… wow! Writing on it’s own is so powerful, but when you give it a voice – it’s undeniably amazing. I’ve always been a writer, for as long as I can remember… putting my thoughts, experiences, emotions and fears down on paper or through blogging has helped me work through so many hurdles in life. It has also helped me learn more about myself, where I am and where I want to go in life.

Thank for posting this… it’s a fantastic reminder of how important it is to be true to oneself…and to never let fear, worry, or otherwise stop you from expressing yourself.

    • I could not agree more and thanks so much for visiting and commenting! I agree… writing is so powerful and I so want to start to use video to express myself too. Glad you liked it and I look forward to visiting you! xo
