I will never forget wanting to fit in. I will never forget the aching longing that drove me to lengths that now, make me laugh, but I see merit in the journey to find comfort in my own unique self; it was necessary.
I wanted to look like Jenny Youngblood. She had pin strait hair, and braided ribbon baretts with ribbons that hung down in her luxurious brown hair, half way down her back.
I wanted to wear a retainer so I un-folded paperclips, and wore them in my mouth across my teeth and smiled when ever anyone looked at me.
I wanted to be tall, so I hung myself of jungle gym bars (i’d seen it done on The Brady Bunch) and I begged my mom to take me to see the doctor about injecting growth hormones.
I wanted to belong to something, someone, so badly, that I would have gladly traded in my own soul to have one just like someone else’s.
I tried to act like someone I looked up to…
However, God had another plan for me, and required that I be unique. Unlike anyone else in the whole world.
My finger prints are unlike anyone else’s- isn’t that amazing?
It’s a lot to grow into, and cultivate. It’s a huge responsibility he’s given me. I wonder why?
Do you ever wonder why?
I used to wonder.. why this family? Why this nose? Why this hair? Why this way of thinking? Why this voice?
Here’s what some people have to say about being unique:
Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. ~Henry David Thoreau
When we allow ourselves to exist truly and fully, we sting the world with our vision and challenge it with our own ways of being. ~Thomas Moore
It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. ~e.e. cummings
I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself, and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part. ~Shirley MacLaine
The strongest force in the universe is a human being living consistently with his identity. ~Tony Robbins
I’m probably telling you something today thats new and different- right? You did not know that you have been given an extraordinary gift in your you-ness did you?
